TONIGHT I’M ON FIRE
TOMORROW I’LL BE FREE
I was born in a mill town
Brick buildings all around
With a black river raging
Through the heart of town
Daddy left one day
What bitter tears I cried
As I watched him drive away
I swear something in me died
We’d had our dreams till then
They began to fade
As Mama drifted
And Daddy stayed away
Then the doors flew open
Men came and went
With drugs and money
To help Mama pay the rent
It stripped away my innocence
My childish soul was torn
Baptized in booze
And brutally reborn
Since then I seen the world
Through a certain hue
Signifying distance
Between me and you
But I ain’t afraid of chaos
Chaos has no name
For the distance
Between conscience and shame
Night blurs the these memories
And though night lifts
If it helps me forget a while
I take it as a gift
Till I wake in the morning
And pull back the blinds
And without warning
See her in my mind
If I make it to Savannah
Before fall arrives
Maybe she’d take me back
And we could build a life
The road is rough and rocky
For them such as me
But tomorrow I’ll leave this room
And walk down to the sea
How I love the ocean
To the sea I’ll return
To feel its waters soothe
This broken heart that burns
I’ll bathe in the water
Let it wash over me
Tonight I’m on fire
Tomorrow I’ll be free
