THE DRUNKEN SERVANT

A light fell through the doorway
As I lay upon my bed
A voice called through a window
As evening skies turned red

His face appeared to me
His eyes spoke to my head
I wept so lost in lonesome shame
And turned away in dread

In aspect most assuring
He called on me by name
Releasing me from what I'd done
Saying I bore no blame

The loneliness that bound my heart
Lifted for a moment clear
And for that shining second
My lost loves all drew near

I awoke at daybreak
And saw no one around
But I recall each word he said
And the peace I found

Though from his gate
I must be turned away
This drunken dream will carry me
Till my dying day
