LET ME RIDE

Met a gamblin’ gal
Name of Lil
Late one night
At the old gin mill

A big-boned beauty
Natural blonde
Said “Come on, daddy
Let’s get gone”

She laughed at my jokes
Sat on my lap
Then she said
“Honey, let’s shoot some craps”

She beat me at cards
She beat me at dice
Then she rocked me so hard
I couldn’t think twice

She said “Hey now baby
Won’t you be my boy
I’ll make you feel good
Like a Spanish viceroy

Gap-toothed women
We rare and true
Nothing in the world
I wouldn’t do for you”

Ride until
The engine stalls
Till there ain’t nothing
Left at all

Ride until
My eyes go blind
For all these tears I’m cryin’
Let me ride

Lil treated me
Pretty damn good
Maybe better than
Any woman ever should

I repaid her love
With theft and lies
Never thinking once
She’d get wise

I spent all her dough
So we went on a spree
Done all right
Till she shot Dupree

Looked at us wrong
She left him for dead
”Didn’t mean to hurt him”
Was all she said

Lil made a move
Grabbed Dupree’s gold
Laughed out loud
And said “bless my soul”

Then she pointed
That .44
Said “I’m leaving you daddy
Get on the floor”

Ride until my
Drugs are gone
Then you can tell me
About the road I’m on

Pedal to metal
Four on the floor
Sure as you’re born
You won’t see me no more
And I’ll ride

I tracked Lil down
To North Dakota
Found her in a bar
Drinking scotch and soda

Handsome stranger
By her side
Lookin’ so happy
I almost cried

I said “Evenin’ Lil
You look swell
Decked in diamonds
Where ya get them pray tell?”

She said “Hey now daddy
You sure look rough
Here’s a $20 bill
Is that enough?”

I went for my pistol
And my gattlin’ gun
But Lil drew first
Like she always done

Said “Oh no, I won’t
Stand for that
I might put a bullet
through your Stetson hat”

Ride until
The water’s wine
Till we reach
The county line

Ride until
The sky explodes
And we hit
The motherlode
Let me ride

“Now I ain’t sorry,
I ain’t ashamed
If I got the gold
You got yourself to blame

Left you on your knees
You never put up no fight
If I got the gold darling
Let it serve you right”

“I loved you daddy
But things done changed
Don’t scandalize
My black name

‘Cause you a chump man, baby
Plain as day
Hate to tell you but I gotta
Make you to pay”

Then she cried “Boys
Here’s the man
He shot Dupree
And away he ran

A cruel and bloody
Thing he done
I seen it all happen
And I got his gun”

Ride until
The sky turns black
And it’s safe
To look back

Way on out
Past love and pain
And there ain’t nothing
Left to explain
Let me ride
