GEAR
I like budget guitars from the 1950s and 60s. They provide idiosyncratic sounds that are an alternative to more well known brands such as Gibson or Fender. Being idiosyncratic, identical guitars from the same company often vary widely in their sound, which leads to lots of trial and error in finding the best combination of amp and guitar. It’s easy to under-estimate these guitars but, when paired with the right amp, they can create sounds of monstrous beauty.
I currently play Supro Lockola and Dual Tone solid body guitars, and a semi-hollow body Silvertone 1454. The Silvertone’s gold-foil pickups were a revelation - I’d never played a guitar with them before, and they’re fantastic if you’re looking for a wild, unbridled sound.
Amps I use include a Fender Deluxe, a Silvertone 1484 and the Univox U45B. I avoid pedals. Nothing against them, they’re just wrong for my sound. I try to keep things simple.
I use Divine Noise cables, manufactured by a mom and pop operation out of Portland OR. They’re well made, sturdy and reliable. Support the little guy!
