DRAINPIPE BLUES

When the lights of the city
Burn way too bright
And you can’t find salvation
Cause you can’t do wrong or right
And your friends write your epitaph
And if you protest they laugh
Baby it plays out sometimes that way

When the blind contessa
Suggests you change your way
And you need the money
Cause they make you pay and pay
Yes she’ll get hers yet
But you’ll never never never forget
Baby it plays out sometimes that way

When you’re breaking down
And you barely know yourself
And your best friend says
You best become someone else
She says there ain’t no need to be ashamed
As you scream and say don’t explain
Baby it plays out sometimes that way

When the shock of the obvious
Catches you by surprise
And now you see the world
Through a beggar’s eyes
He says he don’t mind
But you know he’s just being kind
Baby it plays out sometimes that way

Bright lights big city
But it’s always way too dark
So you jump down a drainpipe
At the east end of the park
To see what waits underground
Maybe it’s treasure you found
Baby it plays out sometimes that way
